The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 is an umbrella legislation that empowers the Central Government to take all necessary measures for protecting and improving the quality of the environment and preventing, controlling, and abating environmental pollution. It was enacted in the wake of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
