Background

Overview

Examines the adaptability of India's core welfare and food security policies to emerging challenges like climate change, linking governance, social justice, and environmental sustainability. Relevant for GS2 (Welfare Schemes, Governance) and GS3 (Agriculture, Environment).

The National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, provides legal entitlement to subsidised foodgrains for a large population, supported by the Public Distribution System (PDS). To address climate change impacts, there is a need to evolve these frameworks to integrate climate risk management and promote a diversified, nutritious food basket.
