Background

Overview

UPSC frequently tests the scope and limitations of fundamental rights, especially in the context of state actions and policies that might infringe upon them. This concept is central to understanding economic freedoms and the balance between individual rights and public interest.

Article 19(1)(g) of the Indian Constitution guarantees all citizens the right to practice any profession, or to carry on any occupation, trade or business. This fundamental right is crucial for economic liberty and livelihood. However, this right is not absolute and can be subjected to reasonable restrictions in the interest of the general public, as specified under Article 19(6).
