Background

Overview

Effective governance of higher education is fundamental to producing skilled human capital, fostering research and innovation, and ensuring social equity. Poor governance leads to systemic failures, student unrest, and hinders national development goals.

The real question is why students are so upset with the governance model of universities that, at times, they not only lose hope but also cross the boundaries of decency and satire. To suggest that this happened simply because of an oral remark by the CJI, which was quickly clarified, is to oversimplify the deeper governance crisis in higher education.

Reclaiming universities through trust, student voice

09 Sep 2026 · The governance of higher education institutions in India is frequently criticized for its centralized, 'control model' approach, which limits academic freedom and student participation. Issues such as politically motivated appointments, chronic underfunding, and lack of accountability contribute to a crisis of trust and frequent student unrest, hindering the institutions' ability to foster knowledge creation and critical thinking. A shift towards a 'liberty model' with greater student involvement and merit-based appointments is advocated.
