Background
Overview
UPSC often tests understanding of international law, humanitarian law, and major geopolitical disputes, especially those with significant human rights implications and UN involvement. The legal status of occupied territories is a recurring theme in international relations.
International law governs the conduct of states, including in situations of armed conflict and occupation. The Fourth Geneva Convention, in particular, outlines the responsibilities of an occupying power towards the civilian population in occupied territories, prohibiting the transfer of its own population into the occupied territory.
