Why is the Zojila tunnel a game changer? | Explains

The Zojila tunnel, the world's longest high-altitude tunnel (13.14 km at 11,578 feet), achieved a breakthrough, promising all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. This engineering marvel, built at a cost of ₹6,800 crore, connects Baltal (Kashmir) with Meenamarg (Ladakh) and is crucial for improving military mobility and logistics along the Line of Control and Line of Actual Control, enhancing national security and integration. It will also significantly benefit local populations by ending winter isolation, facilitating movement of people and goods, and boosting regional economy through tourism, despite facing extreme weather and geological challenges during construction. The tunnel is expected to be fully functional in two years.
