Deprivation points: How JNU’s unique admission model helps marginalised students
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) implements a unique "deprivation points" admission model, introduced in the 1970s, to provide additional points to marginalized candidates. This system aims to address structural disadvantages faced by students from backward regions (classified using Census data indicators like female illiteracy, agricultural workers, rural population, and lack of household toilets), women, transgender persons, and Kashmiri migrants.
