Deprivation points: How JNU’s unique admission model helps marginalised students

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) implements a unique "deprivation points" admission model, introduced in the 1970s, to provide additional points to marginalized candidates. This system aims to address structural disadvantages faced by students from backward regions (classified using Census data indicators like female illiteracy, agricultural workers, rural population, and lack of household toilets), women, transgender persons, and Kashmiri migrants. The model, which has faced legal challenges but continues to be upheld, seeks to ensure inclusivity and draw talent from diverse socio-economic and regional backgrounds, complementing traditional reservation policies. PhD programs were excluded from this system after 2017 following UGC guidelines.
