Amid Sri Lanka’s green energy push, communities in Mannar fear environmental fallout

The article discusses the environmental and social concerns raised by local communities in Mannar, Sri Lanka, regarding large-scale wind power projects aimed at the country's green energy transition. Despite Sri Lanka's ambition to meet 70% of its energy needs from renewable sources, residents report issues like flash floods, coastline erosion, shrinking fish catch, and noise pollution, fearing a link to these projects. The article highlights the lack of scientific evidence provided by authorities to rule out impacts, the controversy surrounding project approvals (e.g., Adani Group's now-withdrawn project), and the need for transparency, community consent, and comprehensive environmental impact assessments. It also mentions India's involvement in some renewable energy projects in Sri Lanka and the geographical significance of Mannar.
