Why India’s IPO markets are heating up after slow first half of 2026

India's Initial Public Offering (IPO) market experienced a significant resurgence in July and August 2026, raising approximately Rs 55,500 crore, after a slow first half of the year. This boom was primarily driven by companies rushing to launch IPOs as their fundraising approvals from regulators like SEBI neared expiry (typically 12 months). Improved market conditions, including a recovery in benchmark indices (Nifty 50, Sensex) from earlier lows caused by high crude oil prices, foreign outflows, and a weaker rupee, also contributed. While mainboard IPOs picked up momentum, the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) segment remained sluggish due to SEBI's tightened regulations aimed at enhancing investor protection, such as increasing retail application size, stricter profitability norms, and longer promoter lock-in periods. SEBI is also examining a proposal to overhaul the entire SME listing framework.
