Nepal wants climate compensation, putting major emitters on the hook

Nepal, following a catastrophic glacial collapse in 2026, has launched an unprecedented diplomatic offensive demanding direct climate compensation from major emitters (US, China, India). This move shifts its foreign policy from seeking humanitarian aid to enforcing legal liability for climate justice. The article highlights the 'Third Pole paradox,' where Nepal, despite negligible emissions, faces severe impacts like rapid glacial melt, devastating floods, and socio-cultural erasure in the Hindu Kush Himalayas. It critiques the geopolitical stances of the major emitters and exposes the profound inadequacies of the global climate finance architecture, particularly the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD), which is slow, underfunded, and offers insufficient compensation. Nepal's action aims to set a disruptive precedent for the Global South.
