This concept helps analyze how media can either challenge or reinforce existing biases and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of global cultures, crucial for a decolonized perspective.
The colonial gaze refers to the analytical framework used to understand how non-Western cultures and peoples are often depicted in Western media, perpetuating stereotypes and power imbalances rooted in historical colonialism. It often exoticizes, simplifies, or misrepresents the 'other' from a dominant Western perspective.
