Background

Overview

Understanding the hierarchy and functioning of the Supreme Court, the principles of judicial review, the significance of constitutional interpretation, and the process by which legal precedents are established and revisited. It's fundamental to Indian Polity.

Constitution Benches of the Supreme Court, comprising five or more judges, are constituted to decide cases involving a substantial question of law as to the interpretation of the Constitution or for the purpose of overruling a previous decision of the Supreme Court.
