PM Modi to make first official visit to New Zealand next week

Coal Ministry permits use of insurance surety bonds as replacement for bank guarantees

The Coal Ministry has permitted coal block allottees to use Insurance Surety Bonds (ISBs) as a replacement for Performance Bank Guarantees (PBGs) to fulfill their performance surety obligations. Coal imports decline 13% in April

India's coal imports declined by 13% (3.14 million tonnes) in April, reducing overall dependence on imported coal from 21.7% to 19.7% of total consumption. This decline was particularly significant in the power sector and plants designed to run on imported coal. The Union Ministry of Coal attributed this trend to increased domestic coal production and offtake, strengthened First Mile Connectivity, close monitoring of thermal power plant stock, and coordinated efforts with the Ministry of Railways and Coal India Limited (CIL) to ensure assured supply to power utilities.

SC refuses urgent hearing on plea against Madras HC order quashing appointment of personal assistants to judges

The Supreme Court declined an urgent hearing on a plea challenging a Madras High Court order that quashed the appointment of 17 Personal Assistants to High Court judges. The Madras High Court had found 'illegalities, irregularities and unnecessary relaxations' in the recruitment process, specifically the relaxation of essential qualifications (shorthand and typewriting) which violated Rule 14A of the Madras High Court Service Rules, 2015, and infringed upon the Right to Equality under Article 14 of the Constitution by denying equal opportunity to eligible candidates.

Indian team discovers rare ‘bow and arrow’ radio galaxy two billion light years from Earth

An Indian-led team of researchers has discovered a rare, bow-and-arrow shaped radio galaxy, named RAD-BAARG, approximately two billion light-years from Earth. This unique structure, 1.8 million light-years wide, was identified using the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey. The discovery, published in the 'Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society', was made by the RAD@home Astronomy Collaboratory, India's first citizen science platform in astronomy. The unusual morphology is attributed to the interaction of the galaxy's radio plasma with a large bow-shock structure formed as the host galaxy falls through hot gas towards a cluster of galaxies. The structure was named after Manipur's Loktak Lake.
