Goddess Saraswati without veena: Sculptures of Pallava, Chola era reveal an earlier iconography

The article discusses the evolution of Goddess Saraswati's iconography, highlighting early sculptures from the Pallava, Chola, and Pala eras that depict her without the veena, an instrument now considered her defining attribute. It details various attributes found in these earlier depictions, such as suvadi, akka mala, ankusha, pasha, kundigai, and tarjani mudra, and points out key temples (Gangaikondacholapuram, Brihadisvara, Kailasanathar, Airavatesvara, Koothanur) where these veena-less images are found. The article suggests that the veena became a standard attribute only in later periods, notably in Hoysala art and Ravi Varma's paintings, and mentions the influence of Pala art on Chola sculptors.

U.S. charges Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar for Nijjar’s killing in Canada in 2023

The U.S. has charged Indian gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar for ordering the assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. This action is part of 'Operation Hardball,' a coordinated international effort by law enforcement agencies from the U.S., Canada, and Europe, leading to 24 arrests connected to three India-based transnational organized crime groups. The killing of Nijjar had previously strained bilateral relations between India and Canada, with Canada's then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linking the Indian government to the murder, a claim India rejected. The current charges highlight international cooperation against racketeering, targeted killings, and narcotics trafficking by these syndicates, whose impact is felt globally, especially in the Indian diaspora.

Understanding the disappearance of Egyptian Vulture in Tamil Nadu

The Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), once common across Southern India, has become locally extinct in The Nilgiris and no longer breeds in Tamil Nadu, with fewer than 150 resident individuals estimated across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Globally listed as Endangered by IUCN, its decline is attributed to veterinary NSAIDs like diclofenac, electrocution, poisoning, habitat disturbance, and changes in traditional livestock rearing. While Karnataka holds the most significant remaining breeding populations, Tamil Nadu serves as a wintering habitat for migratory birds. Conservationists are urging for coordinated efforts, including the establishment of an Egyptian Vulture Conservation Breeding Programme in Tamil Nadu, building on successful models by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) for other vulture species.
