Tamil Nadu’s elusive Bengal foxes and their shrinking space

The Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis), once common in south Indian grasslands, is now elusive due to habitat loss from agricultural expansion, urbanisation, road kills, and persecution during rituals like 'fox jallikattu'. Despite being 'data-deficient' with little population data, conservationists and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department are undertaking surveys, awareness campaigns, and forming task forces, particularly through initiatives like the Salem Innovation Centre, to protect this 'edge species' whose habitats often fall outside protected areas. The species was initially listed as 'vermin' under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, but its numbers have significantly declined.

CBI arrests IAS official in Haryana govt. funds misappropriation case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an IAS official, Pardeep Kumar, former Member Secretary of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), in connection with the alleged misappropriation of ₹169 crore in government funds. The funds were allegedly diverted from HSPCB's account at IDFC First Bank through unauthorized accounts, fraudulent debit transactions, and forged fixed deposits. This case is part of a larger ₹504 crore scam involving eight Haryana government departments. The CBI took over the investigation from the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau and has filed charge-sheets against multiple accused, including bank officials and other public servants.
