Study: Availability of predictable food through garbage and intentional feeding linked to India’s street-dog population
A new study highlights that the availability of abundant and predictable food sources, such as garbage and intentional feeding (termed 'food subsidies'), significantly influences the population dynamics of street dogs in India's urban ecosystems. Rapid urbanization has intensified this issue, leading to increased dog numbers, congregation, and conflicts with humans, as well as predation on wildlife and disease transmission like rabies. The study argues that interventions like sterilization alone are insufficient without simultaneously addressing these food subsidies. It advocates for a shift towards 'multispecies coexistence,' requiring collaborative efforts from public health, veterinary services, waste management, urban planning, and conservation agencies.
